Environment Minister Peter Garrett has taken action against illegal clearing in the Whitsundays on land adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
The land was cleared of its native coastal rainforest without Commonwealth approval, exposing
marine waters to the risk of increased soil runoff and sediment build-up. The Minister has ordered the owners to pay a $250,000 security and to repair the damage by stabilising and revegetating up to 17 hectares of land at Clarkes Cove, north of Airlie Beach.
